That depends on who is doing it. The only real danger these days is of you rolling over on a needle. Most acupuncturists use disposable needles, so the risk of infection is negligible. You do want to see a real acupuncturist. In some places, the laws/regulations regarding it are strange. Where I live, a medical doctor, osteopathic doctor, or doctor of chiropractic can all practice it without extra training. Some places issue licenses specifically for it, and only licensed acupuncturists can practice. Also, some insurances are starting to pay for it. Be sure to check on all of this where you live.
My personal experience with it was wonderful. I often joke that it was worth the money ($90 for the initial visit, $70 for each visit after that) just to take a nap, because it was so relaxing! After a few months of regular treatment, my migraines were gone. I haven't had one since, and I was treated in 2009. I started in April, and only had a couple of migraines while being treated. The summer is usually the worst for me, and I made it through the hottest part without a migraine! The end of July will make 3 years without a migraine. Allopathic medicine did nothing to help them, and the medicines sometimes made them worse.
Most of the time, the needles felt like a cross between a prick, a pinch, and a poke. Some of the points were really sensitive, but they felt like they were the ones that really needed to be needled. I wouldn't say that it "hurt", but I could feel when they went in. They only go in superficially. It is nothing like getting a shot. The needles are more like hair thin pins.
For the first few sessions, and after the sessions where it had been a while, I felt relaxed. I was tired, but rested. I would always feel great within a couple of hours.
I don't know that it did anything for my sex drive. It has always been kind of high anyway.
It did make the migraines stop. However, after my first few weeks of treatment, I did have a couple of very intense, but short lived migraines. The last one I had didn't have the aura like they normally do. It just hit, hard and fast. Then, after a little while, it was gone just as fast.
I highly recommend it.
1. It is excellent in cervical spondylitis, lumbar pain, sciatica, joint pains, and all spinal cord related 'musculo-skeletal' issues.
2. To be give by a well trained, qualified and experienced therapeutist only. Due to the mistake of the therapeutist, risk is very severe.
4 Most suitable for the "open-minded physio-therapeutists" to increase the patient flow by leaps and bounds.
5. No medication required under normal circumstances.
No risk of any sort with Acupressure. Because, Acupressure is mother of Acupuncture.
